1870 and 1880 there were Territorial Census reports and in 1900 there was a
Federal Census.

1885
SOUTH DAKOTA TERRITORIAL CENSUS
These Censuses, like most other State Censuses, were taken in the middle of the gap in Federal Censuses. They began in 1885 and 1895 and then 1915 and 1925. No idea if one was done in 1905. Not a lot of information.
ARTHUR PUTNAM Edmunds County
He is
26 IL.
EDWIN PUTNAM Hand County
He is
43 MI, his wife Julietta Lawrence is 41 MI and they have Eddie (Edwin) 16 MI,
Richard 12 IL, Mary 6 IL, James 4 IL, William H. 4 IL, Joseph 3 IL. Edwin is
number 2632 a son of Jeremy Putnam (1174) from Vermont and then Michigan. A
Michigan County history states he was a son of Jerome Putnam from New York
State. That Jerome was married to Martha Skinner and was in Batavia, New York.
Jerome was part of the ‘other’ New England family out of Hartford, Connecticut.
But…. If you look up Jeremy Putnam (number 1174) in Eben’s book, you’ll see he
went from VT to NY then to MI where he died. No name for the wife, but he had
kids named Edwin, Elizabeth, Spencer and some other ones and they lived in
Jackson County according to the book. So… I think the Jerome mentioned in the
history was really Jeremiah, the kids Edwin (number 2632), Elizabeth (2627 or
2628) and Spencer (2630) are all right here. The Sarah mentioned in the next listing
should be their mother and Jeremy’s widow. Jeremy’s line goes back through
Samuel > Timothy etc., and he was a brother of Alpheus who was in Jackson
County in 1840. Alpheus had a couple of ‘spare’ kids then, that were not
his. Probably Jeremy’s. As no names were used in 1840, the other kids and the
mom, Sarah, were probably living with other families.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Hanson County
He is
34 MI, his wife Mary Norton 33 NY, Miles 12 MI, Duey
a daughter 10 MI, Ida 9 MI and Abram 7 MI. He is a son of Orlean

there by 1915.
